William Gibson to visit Second Life

Jeremy Ettinghausen (aka Jeremy Neumann in SL), Digital Publisher for Penguin Books UK, has recently announced that William Gibson, masterclass cyberpunk author (who is credited as a co-founder of the whole genre with his book Neuromancer written in 1984), is going to be around Second Life to launch his latest book, Spook Country. There will be a few Gibson-promoted activities, like watching Gibson's latest movie No Maps for These Territories.

The fun part of the whole event is the contest for creating a Gibson avatar. If you're interested, just IM Jeremy Neumann!

  3. Fellow Second Lifers and William Gibson fans:

Monday’s screening of William Gibson’s documentary “No Maps for These Territories” in Second Life was thoroughly enjoyable and we had a great crowd. Viewers were intrigued by William Gibson’s disposition and his answers to many of the questions. Many new questions have surely been inspired for the much-anticipated appearance of William Gibson in Second Life on August 2!

For anyone who missed the beginning of the film, or was unable to attend on Monday (as is probably the case with several interested Americans), we are pleased to remind you “No Maps for These Territories” will be screening again this Sunday, July 22. The screening begins at 7:00pm BST (11:00am SLT) and is held in the new cinema in Avalon on the adjacent sim, Rivers Run Red. See you there!

In Avalon, interested avatars can also pick up a William Gibson shipping container full of information on the competitions for a winning container design and William Gibson avatar, which we are hosting until July 30th. Entries and queries can be directed inworld to Margaret Riversrunred or emailed to or IM Jeremy Neumann inworld. Join The Penguin Readers Group for the most updated information.

  4. Exclusive to Second Life--William Gibson's live appearance is this Tursday, Aug 2nd. Doing his first ever reading from Spook Country (to be released in stores next week) and followed by Q&A. The event begins at 12 noon SLT in the cinema on RiversRunRed (via Avalon). Come early to ensure your seat!
